Scarborough and District U14 Netball Knock Out Cup

The year 9 netball team have flown to victory in the Scarborough and District Cup. The league started in September 2012 and the team have played a number of games to get to the finals which were held at Lady Lumleys School on Wednesday 17th April 2013. In the first round the team were drawn against George Pindar Community College, it was a good start to the league with our first victory winning 15-4. In the second round the team played Scalby School, winning 18 goals to 13. In the semi finals the team had to play Ryedale School. This was their toughest game in the league and the girls fought hard to win 15-14. Onto the finals the girls played Lady Lumleys School. The weather conditions were not the best but the girls went out with grit and determination and won 8-4. It has been a fantastic season for the girls and each student should be commended for their effort and commitment into the team's success.

The team includes the following students: Olive Ferguson, Eleanor Anson, Asha Wright, Sophie Watson, Scarlett Aldrich, Steph Bramley, Lucy Walker, Hannah Marshall and Peggy Ullyott.

The Year 7 rugby team had a really good finish to their season by progressing to last week's East Yorkshire Finals. On their road to the final they played fantastically, winning Scalby School 85-0 and South Hunsley 32-5. Unfortunately the boys lost two games, however, they played outstandingly on the day, particular praise goes to George Austin and Archie Johnson for fantastic leadership throughout the competition.

7A's Grand Easter Egg Draw

Students in 7A held a Grand Easter Egg Draw on Monday to raise funds for The Sidings in Malton. It was a resounding success and the sum raised was £131.29p!

Y8 Boys Football

Well done to the Y8 boys football team who won the Ryedale and Whitby six-a-side football tournament held at Malton Community Sports Centre, last week.

The boys won four out of their five matches. Star performers were Ethan Chan and Oliver Hildreth, with strong performances from Noah Jackson and Thomas Richardson.

KS3 Badminton silver medals

Congratulations to our KS3 girls badminton team who earned a silver medal in the North Yorkshire County Center Parcs Badminton Competition earlier this week in York.

The team, Sophie Watson (captain), Eleanor Anson, Olive Ferguson and Lucy Walker played fantastically, only faltering at the last hurdle to Ripon Grammar School.

Bags2School/PTA

A big thankyou to all parents who supported our Bags2School collection on 11 December, we raised £210. We will be organising another collection on 11 June, so watch out for the blue bags being sent home a few weeks prior to collection, you can add additional black bags, the more the better!!

So where does the money go to that we raise?

We decided this year to ask individual departments within Malton School to submit bids for funds. I am delighted to announce that PE, Citizenship and Design and Technology departments successfully attracted funding to help with the purchase of bibs and balls, first aid mannequins and materials to help establish a new resource in respect of jewellery making for the lower school. In addition we have asked the school council for funding ideas, we feel it is important that students are also able to bid for funds. We are in the process of evaluating their suggestions and will report on the progress in future newsletters.

So, please continue to support the PTA, we want as many children as possible to benefit across our school community.

If you would like to be involved in the PTA, just come along to our meetings, the next one is being held on Tuesday 15 January in the west wing.

School raised a whopping £830.00 towards the recent Children in Need fundraiser. The money was raised through non-uniform contributions and a giant bring and buy sale as well as other smaller individual fund raising events. Well done to all involved.

CELEBRATION EVENING

Students, parents and guests gathered at Malton School for the annual celebration of the successes and highlights of the previous year. The evening as always was a mixture of award presentations, news reports on the year, musical performances and a magic slot.

The whole evening was presented by Head Boy and Girl Keir Barnet and Emily Metcalfe, and their deputies Hugo Buckland and Hannah Poole. The news reports were presented by Philippa Norman and Josh Hill.

The music performances were performed by Polly Everitt – vocal solo and Emily Leeson - vocal solo and the magical act was performed by Matthew Woollons.

Rewards Trip

Students in Years 8 to 11 who had done well in their work last year were rewarded with a trip to Flamingo Land on 21 September. To qualify, students had to have gained fifty house points and not to have been in isolation. The whole day was a great success and all who went thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Those who did not qualify this time had a day of normal subject lessons.

CARLTON LODGE

On Friday 21 September, whilst the rest of the school were at Flamingo Land, the Year 7 students enjoyed a day of activities at Carlton Lodge Outdoor Activity Centre near Thirsk. The students took part in various activities including archery, orienteering, problem solving, kayaking and raft building. A great day was had by all, even though the water was freezing!!

Camps International Kenya Trip

Kenya Trip

A group of 21 students from Malton School and Ryedale School have returned this Summer from their trip to Kenya with Camps International. They spent a month in the country helping with local community and wildlife conservation projects. One of their most memorable achievements was summiting the 4985m Point Lenana, of the Mount Kenya region, despite driving snow and hail, and for some of the group, varying degrees of altitude sickness.

In addition, the group helped to construct channels for ecologically important water holes, took part in construction work of houses and school rooms, erected much needed fencing for local project areas, created resources to help local youths find gainful worthwhile and sustainable employment and prepared ground for a tree planting project that will reduce wind and topsoil erosion in the particularly arid Imani region.

The experience was potentially life-changing for those involved and was the culmination of over a year’s preparation and fund raising. Students would like to thank their teachers, Jon Steel, Liz McGlen and Jenny Flintoft for giving up most of their summer holiday and supporting us on the trip. A big thank you must also go to everyone who made their experience in Kenya possible, by helping them with their fundraising.

CultureShock Festival POSTPONED

School has been informed that the CultureShock Festival due to take place this weekend had been postponed due to the weather. Emergency vehicles are unable to access the site, so for health and safety reasons the festival will be rescheduled at a later date.

Former student torch bearer

Former Malton School student Jamie Green was one of the Olympic torch bearers yesterday (18 June), taking his turn on one of the Scarborough legs of the long journey.

Jamie was chosen because of his work with the WhizzKids charity - which works for young disabled people.Jamie is pictured below with current Malton student Joe Thomson, whose Mum & Dad sent in the photo.

MBE for former student

Former Malton School student John Holden, who was a student at the school 1980-1985, has been named in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. John is currently a Lieutenant Colonel in the army, and is on his ninth operational tour of duty, serving in Afghanistan. He has been awarded an MBE. In a remarkable coincidence, his nephew Richard Swailes is actually on the same tour at present.

Alex Joannides

Sad News that Alex Joannides has died. Alex was Head of English at Malton Grammar School from 1968, and then subesequently at Malton School from 1971 until 1992. He was also a lay preacher in the local area.

A Greek national, after retiring Alex split his time between living in Greece and in Pickering. We do not have full details of his death, but we believe he was taken ill on a trip to Greece earlier this year, and died shortly after. This was probably in March. If you read this and know more please contact Steve Fearnley at stf@maltonschool.org

New date for talent show

Following the postponement of our Talent Show on 9 Feb, due to the severe and uncertain snowy weather on 9 February, we are now planning for the show to go ahead on Tuesday 28 February, at 7.00pm. We hope everyone who entered first time round will still be able to perform, and all those who bought tickets will still be able to attend. If there are problems, please contact reception for refunds, or possibly for extra tickets!

Talent Show Postponed

The Talent Show planned for Thursday 9 February has been postponed due to the worsening weather conditions.

We took this decision late in the afternoon, with great reluctance given the excitement amongst the 20 acts who were to perform, but the snow is set to continue falling and we must put people's safety first.It would not be sensible to have people travelling home in potentially heavy snow after nine o'clock on an evening. We can find another night for this event.

We hope to run the evening after the half term holiday - so performers, keep practising! The new date will be announced on return from the half term break.

Annual Celebration Evening Thursday 10 November 2011

Students, parents and guests gathered on Thursday evening at Malton School for the annual celebration of the successes and highlights of the previous year.

The evening as always was a mixture of awards presentation, news reports on the year, musical performances – and a magician this year, for a little variety!

The whole evening was presented by Head Boy and Girl Lewis Rawling and Holly Johnson, and their deputies Josh Eldridge-Smith and Bryony Hall. The news reports were presented by Emily Farrow and Will Spencer.

The varied music performances were by Adam Mort – Rap, Lauren Holmes – vocal solo, Johan Cordel and Mrs Kettlewell – violin duet, Greg Storey – electronic drum solo, Alex Tate-Smith and Emily Stolting – vocal duet. The grand finale was a dance routine by Year 9 girls Beth Armstrong, Harriet Ennis, Hollie Fletcher, Emily Liversedge, Anitri Marr, Charley Metcalf, Emily Miller. The magical act was performed by Matthew Woollons.

Many of the trophies awarded are in memory of former teachers or students.

At the end of the evening the mayor of Malton, Councillor Fitzgerald Smith, spoke on behalf of the guests. "This is the third year I have attended this event, and I have to say the bar has been raised another level once again – the performers were terrific, and so many students gaining awards gives us all hope for the future, and great pride in the young people’s achievements. One particular aspect I always notice is the great mutual supportiveness and camaraderie amongst the students. What a delightful evening!"

Malton School Centenary Evening. 18 October 2011

Over 100 students and staff past and present met to celebrate the centenary of the opening of Malton Grammar School on its current site, as well as the 40^th anniversary of Malton School in its present status as an 11-18 comprehensive: it was in 1971 that Malton Grammar School and Malton County Modern merged to become one school.

The evening provided the opportunity for people across the ages to meet up and remember old times. The current head boy and girl Lewis Rawling and Holly Johnson, and their deputies Josh Eldridge Smith and Bryony Hall, presented a brief history of the school. They were aided with musical interludes from the different eras. James Poole began with Debussy’s Girl with the Flaxen Hair from 1911; Emily Stolting and Alex Lancaster played the old school song from the 1930s; Lewis Delaney, Declan Suddaby, Russell Quinn and Steve Smith played Elvis Presley’s Houd dog from the 1950s; Declan Gough played Tony Christie’s Amarillo from 1971; and bringing everyone up to date Joanna Booker and Cameron Race played Adele’s Someone Like You.
Following the formal presentations, guests had the opportunity to tour their old classrooms and see the changes in the school since they left, and to look at the school large collection of archive photographs and memorabilia.

Deputy Head Steve Fearnley, who organised the event, commented: “We were delighted to welcome everyone last night. I think we had representatives of every decade from the 1930s right up to the present day. Everyone seemed to enjoy their trip down memory lane, and the performances of our current students. One lady e-mailed to say “I would like to say a big thank you to you and everyone who clearly put in so much work to make a wonderful and entertaining evening last night. The entertainment was well planned and presented and the students I spoke to seemed to enjoy themselves as much as the ‘oldies’. I can’t believe how little the old building has changed. Special thanks to your head boy and girl who dealt with those of us touring the old Grammar School behaving like excited five year olds and scattering in every direction with kindness, humour and tolerance. They were a credit to the school and wonderful ambassadors for the current generation of students.”

It was not just local people who came. Some travelled quite a distance to be here – certainly there were people from Middlesbrough, Bishop Auckland, and Barton on Humber. One lady who left school in 1951, Gillian Kirby, actually lives in Santa Monica, California, but was visiting Malton so was delighted to be able to come along.

Centenary photos

As hoped, some photographs have been coming in as a result of our asking for any photos or memorabilia in preparation for our centenary exhibition and special event on Tuesday 18 October. We also have promise of others on the evening, and John Prest brought in a panoramic photo, some exercise books and even dared to share his reports with us!

At present about a hundred people have indicated they are coming to the event on Tuesday evening - look in the news archive for more details, or in the Newsletter archive for a special centenary newsletter. Y7 visit Carlton Lodge

The year 7’s travelled to Carlton Lodge, just outside Thirsk to give the students an opportunity to get to know one another and their form tutors in an informal setting. They learned the importance of working together as a team to build rafts and then had the fun of racing them on the lake. Those that managed to stay dry then made the most of the sunny weather and decided to jump in for a swim. They experienced new activities such as kayaking and archery and encouraged each other to undertake new challenges by climbing to the ‘leap of faith’ on the high ropes course. Some brave souls even tried hanging upside down.

Rewards Trip 2011

Malton School students spent a day at Lightwater Valley on Monday on the school’s annual Rewards Trip. All students who have achieved at least 50 housepoints, and have avoided detentions or other serious problems are invited to attend, and over 500 students qualified for the trip.

The school booked the entire theme park for their use, and staff and students had a great day enjoying the late summer weather and rides.

International School Award

At the weekend we received the wonderful news that we have been accredited with the full International School Award. This established quality mark, which is not easy to achieve, recognizes the strength of our international work both within the curriculum and through our growing extra-curricular provision of residential study visits and foreign exchanges. It is a key feature of any excellent school that it should provide a wealth of opportunity for students to learn about and experience the wider world into which they will move as adults.

The whole staff team have contributed to this but particular thanks go to Mr Steel for leading and co-ordinating this aspect of our provision.

Our special day this year, on Wednesday 19 October, will be an internationally themed day with the students participating in mixed age groupings within their respective Houses.

Exam Results 2011

Another record breaking year, continuing our gradual but relentless improvement on the key measures for exam performance:

GCSE

The percentage of 16 year olds achieving the level 2 threshold (that is 5 or more A*-C grades) was 80%, the third year in a row we have passed the 70% mark, and up 2% on last year’s high.

5 A*-C grades including English Language and Maths is also up to a new high of 64%.
Remarkably all students (100%) achieved a grade C or equivalent in at least one subject.
5 students gained all grade A or A* results. The best individual performances came from Ellen Mitchell with 7 A* and 4 A’s; James Poole and Alex Lancaster with 7 A* and 3 A’s. Kate Ferguson achieved 5 A* and 6 A’s, and Cameron Race 4A* and 7 A’s. (All these also achieved A or A* in Religious Studies Short Course).
28 students achieved an A* in at least one of their courses.

A Level

The overall pass rate was 96% in this our largest ever year group taking A levels.

The average total points score per student was 812: with 270 points being equivalent to an A grade, this represents just over 3 A grades per student on average – the 6th year in a row that we have achieved this remarkable outcome.
The percentage of grades achieved at A*-B was up to 43%.
There were 14 A* grades, shared between 8 students and across 8 subjects. The superstars were: Alex Borrill with 3 A* in chemistry, maths, and physics; Kieran Leckenby with 3 A* in maths, further maths and physics, (plus another A grade); Louise Smith with 2 A* in maths and physics, (plus another A grade); Catherine Sanderson with 2 A* in biology and chemistry (plus another A grade); Amy Szuman in maths (plus 3 other A grades); Josephine Smith in PE; Sam Spencer in business studies, and Harry Wright in English (plus 3 other A grades). Harry was successful in being accepted by Caius and Gonville College at Cambridge University to read English Literature.

For Year 12 students, AS exams mark the half way stage on their way to A level success, so results are not celebrated in the same way. A lot of hard work is put in by students and staff to improve on these grades, through targeted re-sits, as the students move through Year 13. However, we must congratulate a number of students on excellent grades: top performances this year come from Ian Mason with AAAAB; Jenna Keys AAAAC; , Tom Gentry and Cara Raistrick with AAAA, James Douthwaite AAABC, and Kate Dalgleish, Heather Leckenby, Kate Sunley and Jack Bradshaw with AAAB.

It is pleasing to note our highest ever number of A grades (57), and B grades (80), and we are hopeful of these results converting into excellent A level results next year.

Finally we should mention 78 students who achieved an OCR National Vocational Qualification Pass in ICT – equivalent to a GCSE grade C pass.

2011 Enterprise Challenge

Well done to all those taking part in this year’s Enterprise Challenge competition.

A new trophy is to be awarded to this year’s winner, Peggy Ullyott (Year 7) who single-handedly raised over £500; the names of previous winners, Tom Nesfield and Hepzibah Baldwin, will be added to the trophy.

For the third successive year, students participated in what is becoming, an annual event. We beat the previous target and had more students participating than ever before making this our most successful year to date. Students raised in excess of £1500 through a range of initiatives including sweet and cake stalls, parties, busking, raffles, guess the number of sweets in a jar; sponsored walks, swims and silences to name but a few.

One Student's Contribution

If the school had a, 'Contribution to the Community' Award, that accolade would go to Hannah Richardson (Year 8), whose enterprise challenge activity was praised in a letter to the school that brought a tear to the eye of most readers. Here are some extracts from the letter:

Hannah "... recently organised a Talent Contest in the cul de sac that she lives for her Enterprise challenge, the event was attended by many people ... and was a wonderful event, not only was it fun but Hannah managed to bring together a large group of very diverse people ... Listening to Hannah perform and present the show was a pleasure, she is a very talented young lady.

It was an absolute pleasure to spend an evening in a friendly environment, Hannah is a very unassuming young lady ... another plus she raised more than £90.

Please give her praise and a big thank you ... by all means pass my thoughts to her. She is sure to be an inspiration to other pupils ... Thank you Hannah for a lovely evening sat in the sunshine with the community spirit that is all too missing in this era! London Trip

A brilliant time was had by all! The 3-D film prior to the London Eye proved a big hit. Students enjoyed the ‘Lion King’ and ‘Shrek’ with opinions split as to which was best.

The Cabinet War Rooms were fascinating and students took part in an ‘operation’ as messengers, coders, typists and plotters (plotting operations on a world map). It brought home to the students the manpower involved and the fact there were no computers! They also enjoyed a visit to Covent Gardens.

Plans are already underway for next years trip which will take place in June due to the Olympics.

Sports Leaders go to Romania

Three year 11 sports leaders, Ben Stubbings, Megan Farrow and Alex Richardson, have just returned from a 'life changing' project, working with young people in Romania, providing a week long summer play scheme in a village called Barcanesti, one hours drive north east of Bucharest. Based in the local Romanian school our students organised and delivered a range of arts, crafts and sporting activities and also provided equipment for the school to sustain the activities. The project (comprising of nine sports leaders), now in its second year, is a collaboration between Ryedale's four secondary schools and is totally funded by the students themselves through fundraising events during the year leading up to the trip. Such events included, car washing teachers cars, a duck race at Thornton Dale, Kirkbymoorside 10km run, auction of promises and a race night. The students fundraising also provided funding for the Romanian school to develop its Arts and performance facilities and complete the play facilities which was started by last years trips fundraising.

Year 7 students here at Malton have been fantastic in their fundraising to support the trip, not only helping raise money but also providing history and geography resources on our local area, including a film, which we shared with the Romanian students .

A big thank you to all students, staff, parents and the local community who have supported the project.

Plans are already underway to continue with Romania 2012!

McCain Foods Business Challenge

Well Done Year 12 Business Studies Students

For three weeks in the summer term, business students have been involved in a McCain sponsored project looking at how the school dining experience could be improved. Working in teams, students had to analyse market research results, undertake further independent research and then generate and cost proposed solutions.

Apprentice-style presentations took place on Tuesday 19 July at which each team pitched their proposals to Rob Williams and representatives from McCain and the business world.

Sue Jefferson, Director of McCain wrote to the school, 'My colleagues and I would like to commend you on the quality of content and presentations we saw. Please pass on our congratulations to all the teams and individuals involved – we saw some moments and people of brilliance that we would be proud to have in our business. Particular congratulations to the ‘Applecrumble and Fish’ team for an all-round excellent response to the brief.'

Getting to Know You - Year 6 Intro Days

On Tuesday and Wednesday 28 and 29 July 98 Year 6s joined us from 16 different primary schools around North Yorkshire. It was their first chance to come together before forming our new cohort of Year 7s in September.

The first day began with an assembly where they were greeted by Mrs Thorpe, Head of Year 7/Transition, Mrs Lovegrove, Head of KS3 and the Headteacher Mr Williams. They also met their form tutors and the other members of their tutor groups and learned which house (Air; Fire; Water or Earth) that they were in. The rest of the day was spend having an enjoyable time identifying pond species, making jelly worms and hovercrafts, and burning things in the science building.

On the second day they discovered the joys of toys and games through the ages and competed in a mini Olympics with historical toys and used algebra to solve puzzles in Maths. The rain kept off for the afternoon which enabled them to compete in a fast and furious handball tournament which Air house won.

The days also gave them the chance to become more familiar with the dining hall and to try the school dinners and to feel a little more settled before their move in September. We look forward to them joining us.

Malton School's annual Sports Day was held on Tuesday 12 July. Although the day was dry, a cool north easterly breeze was blowing lowering the temperature. The temperature was good for the competitors, as shown by some excellent performances – records falling, but as some of the spectators would agree it was warmer running, jumping or throwing, than sitting watching.

Maltons Incredible Play!

Students at Malton School performed Alan Ayckbourn’s Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations as part of the 'play in a week' on Friday 8 July.

Students and staff were in rehearsals all week, with some students also designing and making props and scenery.

The night also included music from James Poole, a fund-raising cupcake stall and a raffle.

Miss McMurdo, Teacher of English, said: 'I couldn’t be more proud of the students. I’m always amazed by the wealth of talent at the school and the students' willingness to take part. It's been a very intense week, but their motivation and enthusiasm didn’t falter. The performance was a huge success - the actors delivered their lines with professionalism, the backstage crew were invaluable and the art/props department created one of the best friezes I’ve seen.'

Biology Field Trip to Saltwick Bay

On a Monday 4 July, 34 A-Level biology students and six staff enjoyed a day on the beach collecting data to help them prepare for their A2 Biology coursework.

They carried out a line transect and measured abundance of all the species found using quadrats placed along this transect. This data will then be used to carry out statistical analyses back in the lab at school. All the students worked hard and as the tides were in our favour we were able to finish in time for a trip to Whitby town centre for fish and chips and ice cream! A good time was had by all and although a bit of a chilly wind on the beach the sun shone all day

Art Exhibition Winners

The annual art exhibition of students’ examination work took place at Malton School on Thursday evening 23 June. Art work covered all the corridor walls in the East Wing of the school, as well as walls and display stands in the two main art studios, and the three sixth form art studios. A variety of invited guests, parents, teachers, and students past and present gathered to view the impressive range and variety of work on display, which included paintings in varied media, video art, sculpture, pottery, building design models and game designs.

The evening began with the award of the annual Emma Howard Memorial Art Prize. Judging proved so difficult this year that we ended up with joint winners for the first time – Paige Platt and Louis Newman. Mr & Mrs Howard were kind enough to double the prize money rather than split the award – our thanks as always to the Howards for their continuing support of our artwork.

If you missed the exhibition but would like to see the work, do come along to our school Open Day on Tuesday 5 July, when the work will still be on view, along with the whole of the school on a normal working day, from 9:30 – 3.00PM.

History Trip to Ryedale Museum

On Friday 17 June, Ms Nichol's Year 7 History group - 7J, accompanied all the Year 9s to Ryedale Folk Museum. The Year 9s were taking part in a World War II day, but 7J were there for a totally different reason! They have been making a film and completing a book on The History of North Yorkshire and they were there to finish off their filming.

The film and the book are going to be taken to Romania with the Sports Ambassadors Ben Stubbings, Alex Richardson and Megan Farrar when they go work at the Barcanesti School, Romania for a week in July.

As well as completing filming and working on their book, 7J made a timeline which will also be taken. Several students made Roman shields and two of them made standards and played the part of Roman Standard Bearers in the film! We were also able to film some of the World War II activities going on. We expected the rain but we were so lucky and it held off for us.

A massive Thank You to Ryedale Folk Museum for their help and loan of costumes and to all the staff involved at Malton School.

Are We There Yet? Y8 Calais Trip

Year 8 French Trip to Calais

Last week 30 Year 8 students took part in an exciting French trip to Calais. We had a very early start, leaving Malton at 6.30 am on Monday morning followed by a very long drive around 7 hours down to Dover where we were catching the ferry. About a hour or two after setting off we heard the usual cries of 'Are we there yet?' ringing throughout the coach. We had one stop en route to Dover, at a services, where students bought lots of sweets, magazines and also a sausage and egg muffin or two. Once we were on the ferry students had the opportunity to walk around on their own for an hour. We arrived at the Hotel Ibis in Calais at around 5pm and students checked into their rooms and had a chill out session for around an hour.

We then decided to go to the beach in Calais where we had a fantastic Boules tournament with three teams: Team Steel, Team Butler and Team Richardson. The clear winner was Team Butler!

On Tuesday we visited a cheese factory which most of the students enjoyed apart from the pungent smell of cheese in the caves. After a packed lunch we went to visit Les Grottes de Naours, which is an underground city. Each student had their own audio guide telling them about the city. After tea we went bowling and also played a laser game which all students really enjoyed some too much (Matt Watson).

The following few days we visited a French market and aquarium in Boulogne-sur-mer, and a snail farm, which was very interesting. We also visited a city called Amiens where students had the opportunity to go shopping and practise their French. I was really pleased that all students had a little go at speaking some French. I was very proud of them.

It was a fantastic trip and students enjoyed all the activities that they took part in. They also enjoyed the French food in the hotel, which was fabulous.

Red Nose Day

On 18 March 2011 Malton School celebrated comic relief. They are renowned for fundraising and their wacky ideas. This year everybody got involved in a sponsored dance with Mr Bruce (maths teacher) - the Cha-Cha slide. The pupils had to dance continuously for 30 minutes. They raised over £1000 (approximately), just for the Cha-Cha slide. They also organized cake sales, apple bobbing, sponge throwing and many more, these smaller activities have helped to get raise more money. People also did their own activities such as people walking around with their legs/arms tied together. Everybody joined in and it was a thoroughly enjoyable day.

Sports Centre Opening

Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu cuts the ribbon to open the new Malton Community Sports Centre, watched by invited guests and all the Malton School students and staff. Then there were sports demonstrations by Malton School students, and an opportunity for guests to see the new facilities in full action.

Dr Sentamu said: "Sport, and exercise, is a wonderful part of a healthy life and a healthy community. It binds people together through their shared enterprise and a shared experience. Opening the centre has given me the chance to look around the excellent facilities which have been built here and it is exciting to see the range of sports on offer for the whole community. This sports centre is a real attraction for Malton, and I know that it will be a great blessing to all who use it.”
