Malton School enjoys close support from the local community. This generates a family atmosphere in school where relationships between staff and students, and amongst the student body, are unusually strong. We have a mutually supportive environment. Students feel able to take risks in extending their learning because others are happy to celebrate their success. The young people know that those around them will be pleased when they do well, whether that be in sport, music, art, drama or in any academic subject where they have a particular gift or talent that can shine. Creating these opportunities for every young person and capturing it, with recognition and reward, when they do well, provides the cornerstone for each child to develop and flourish.
Malton School is held in high affection by former students who return to visit us each year and who keep contributing to our Friends organisation, the Maltonians. Recently a former Head Girl, Sheila Pratt, has left us a £100,000 legacy in her will. This is a dramatic and significant contribution but it sits within a context where many former students do give back to help the school with its ongoing work. The sense of personal development and traditional values, upon which the success of the school were built, are still perpetuated today.
Malton School has developed a strong balance of the best of these traditional values – of tolerance, respect, politeness, smart appearance and an industrious work ethic – with forward looking approaches to teaching and learning. The school has stayed true to the delivery of well-regarded subjects and qualifications within its curriculum offer at GCSE and A Level. The more modern aspects of our curriculum offer have been built round our strengths as a Specialist Science school. For example, we offer an Engineering diploma for students at pre-16 and post-16 level in conjunction with Derwent Training Association.
There is a real strength in being a successful 11 to 18 school. The vibrant sixth form, with the highest average attainment for non-selective schools in North Yorkshire since 2006, adds greatly to the life of the whole school with the older students acting as positive role models supporting the younger ones round school and in certain lessons. The students in the lower school are often inspired to emulate the success of the sixth formers in general and through specific extra-curricular opportunities in music, drama and sport.
The facilities of the school have improved significantly in recent years with the building of a sports centre and full-sized floodlit 3G astro-turf pitch. These give the school the best sports facilities in the district. The Food rooms were fully refurbished in 2011 and provide an excellent environment for students to develop their cookery skills. A fantastic new dance and drama studio, which doubles as a lecture theatre and performance space, has been opened. Our Design Technology suite had a half a million pound investment in the summer of 2016 with two new multi-purpose classrooms, an ICT and CADCAM area, a brand new workshop, new machinery and enhanced display areas. We have 8 specialist Science Laboratories with a superb team of teachers and technicians. Our Art department provides an unrivalled atmosphere for creative work of the highest standard.
