A Decade in the Spotlight – Celebrating 10 Years of Theatre at Malton School

Calling all past students who have been involved in school shows at Malton School over the past decade!

We would like to invite you to a special performance of our 10th annual school show ‘Chicago’ to help us celebrate ten years of theatre at Malton School. Each performance will begin with a tribute to the Malton School shows from 2015 to 2026, with a short presentation of photographs and videos to honour the work of previous students. We will also have available to purchase, a special souvenir programme that contains photographs and memories of all our previous shows and something you can takeaway to keep those special memories alive for years to come.

We hope you will be able to make it to one of our fantastic performances where we present a revival of the show that we were three weeks from performing back in 2020 when we were plunged into lockdown. We are excited to bring this back as our 10th performance and to show you how far we’ve come from those humble beginnings before theatre became the beating heart of Malton School.

Mr J Lee, Director, commented:

The house lights dim, a hush settles over the rows of expectant parents and peers, and for a split second, the air is thick with that unmistakable opening-night electricity. It is a scene that has played out dozens of times over the last decade at Malton School, but the magic never seems to fade. This year, as we celebrate the 10th annual school show, we aren’t just looking back at a collection of scripts and sets; we are celebrating ten years of students finding their voices, overcoming stage fright, and building a community that feels more like a family than a classroom.

When I joined Malton School in 2017 with Mrs Coulbeck it was just the two of us. In the space of a year, we doubled the numbers of students taking part in the show to 60. Today, in 2026 we are performing our 7th show involving over 140 students and a staff team of 12 building on the early successes since the creation of the Drama Studio Theatre in 2015. It has been a humbling experience to see the growth and I couldn’t be more proud today looking back over the years and at every single student who has taken part either on stage, in the band or behind the scenes of one our shows.

If the stage floorboards at Malton School could talk, they’d tell stories of frantic costume changes, legendary improvised saves, and the kind of thunderous applause that stays with a child forever. From our very first production in 2015 to the show-stopping performances of today, the Performing Arts family have spent the last decade proving that theatre is the beating heart of our school. Ten years on, the spotlight is brighter than ever as we take a bow and look back at the journey that shaped us and the students who convinced us that “the show really must go on”.

Headteacher, Rob Williams commented:

“An excellent school should always seek to offer to the students as wide a range of high quality opportunities and experiences as possible. This is what we do at Malton. The performing arts is a very important part of that offer. I can see the way the buzz of being involved in these productions, in whatever capacity, builds the confidence and self-esteem of the young people. The students gain skills, and memories, which will stay with them forever. I want to thank Mr Lee and the whole staff team involved. They work with the students to put on performances that go beyond the standards you might typically expect from a school production. If you haven’t seen one yet, please try to get a ticket!”
