MCSC – Not Just Sport, It’s So Much More

We recently told you about the important part the Centre plays in the sporting life of our community. Did you also know Malton Community Sports Centre plays an invaluable role in the wider health care of residents from Ryedale and beyond.  Essential NHS services are accommodated on the site, on a daily, weekly and monthly basis, reinforcing the School’s aim to be at the heart of the community.

With its central location and ample on-site parking, the Centre is an ideal venue for services such as: Blood Donation Sessions which use the sports hall; Breast Screening with a mobile screening unit housed in the Centre’s grounds; rehabilitation sessions for people with specific medical conditions such as MS and Alzheimer’s as well as patients recovering from strokes and heart attacks.  Other organisations have also used it for specific activities – MENCAP have delivered activities for young people at the Centre and we have been able to assist them with funding applications to develop similar projects.  Staff at the Centre have also built a relationship with Next Steps in Norton with the aim of developing a drop-in community allotment in the Centre’s grounds to support adults living with mental health challenges.

Below are just a few quotes from users of these vital community services.

Giving blood can quite literally save someone’s life:

“The centre has been invaluable to NHS Blood and Transplant over the years in Hosting Blood Donor sessions for the local community to give their Blood which is then supplied to hospitals throughout the Country. I have been booking this venue since at least 2016 but our visits more than likely date back much further. We usually hold a minimum of 12 donor sessions per year here and the team are always reliable in accommodating our needs which are quite different to most other sports hall hire users. The team are a hard-working bunch and always happy to help us if needed.” Gillian Harrison, Regional Planning Co-ordinator – North, NHS Blood & Transplant

In partnership with Malton Hospital, MCSC delivers weekly rehabilitation sessions for patients:

“In April 2019 I had a heart attack, so I needed to find a place to exercise, and I was recommended Malton Community Sport Centre by the physiotherapy department at the local hospital. I looked up what was available and suitable for me, and I found get fit gently would be ideal for me focusing on endurance, strength and recovery” comment from a North Yorkshire resident.

It may have surprised you to learn that there is so much going on at Malton Community Sports Centre.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if there was even more in the future?  We want to work together to build a healthier future, not only for our students but parents, carers, staff, all residents of Malton and Norton as well as the wider Ryedale community. As our school motto states, we really do believe we are ‘STRONGER FOR BEING ONE.’
