Behaviour
As a school our community is built upon mutual care and respect for each other and so behaviour is part of Personal Development – equipping students with the skills, attributes and character traits they need to thrive both in their studies and future lives. You can read more about about our Personal Development Curriculum here. Whilst we do have standards of behaviour that we expect students to adhere to, this is about helping them develop confidence, resilience and a positive attitude.
And like other aspects of our curriculum, the Behaviour Curriculum links with our 3 pillars – Support, Inspire, Thrive:
Support – Helping You Grow as a Person
Our “Support” value addresses students’ physical and security needs, ensuring they feel safe and cared for. With a dedicated pastoral team and Heads of Year, alongside the tutor system and planned developmental activities, we provide a stable, secure learning environment. Wellbeing initiatives, student feedback-driven assemblies, and a positive conduct system promote emotional security, rewarding good behaviour while addressing any negative actions, ensuring every student feels safe.
Inspire – Helping You Aim High and Love Learning
Our “Inspire” value focuses on developing social skills and a sense of community. Initiatives like the Red Award and Wider World work promote diversity, social responsibility, and global awareness. Through Personal Development Activities (PDA), students from different year groups collaborate, building friendships, fostering cooperation, and developing an appreciation for social diversity, both within the school and in the wider world.
Thrive – Getting You Ready for Life After School
The “Thrive” value supports self-esteem and self-actualisation, helping students develop confidence, make informed choices, and pursue personal goals. The curriculum encourages a growth mindset, offering subject and career pathway choices that cater to individual strengths and interests. Our iPad for Learning scheme fosters independent learning, while achievements are celebrated through awards, Celebration Evenings, and house point systems. Extracurricular opportunities in leadership, sports, and the arts provide students with the chance to develop and showcase their full potential.
Below are details of the behaviours we expect students to demonstrate in school. This also links with our Positive Conduct system, which you can access here. The aim of our behaviour curriculum is to encourage, recognise and reward positive behaviour, as well as personal responsibility. This in turn helps reinforce the positive sense of community within our school, where everyone is mindful and considerate of each other’s needs, and all understand that we benefit from mutual support and are “stronger for being one”. The fundamental principles of this are ensuring that at all times students:
- listen carefully when staff speak to understand what is being asked of them.
- follow instructions the first time to use their time effectively and make the most of each day.
- respond calmly and respectfully when challenged on behaviour so that situations can be resolved quickly and fairly.
- let the teacher know if they feel themself becoming frustrated or angry to get support before things escalate.
- accept correction without arguing or refusing to move forward and stay focused.
- interact with their peers in a way that means everyone feels welcome and included and unkindness or bullying are not tolerated.
- never use abusive or derogatory language so that everyone feels valued and respected.
- do not engage in play fighting so that everyone remains safe and supported.
- apologise when they make a mistake to show compassion to others.
