Medical Science
QUALIFICATION:
Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Medical Science (AAQ)
OVERVIEW:
This exciting new qualification is being offered in response to an increasing interest in progression into medical sciences in place of traditional academic routes into medicine. It will appeal to you if you have an interest in working in a medical or healthcare related field such as sports therapy, physiotherapy, biomedical sciences or psychology; or if you would like to study a science subject at a higher level but don’t want to pick a single science A level and feel that a course with some internal assessment will allow you to achieve a better outcome.
During the Medical Science AAQ you will study the principles and applications of medical science through three mandatory units, and further explore other areas in more detail via an optional unit.
The mandatory units develop:
- knowledge and understanding of human physiology, anatomy and pathology
- practical skills in microbiology and their application in the diagnosis of disease
- understanding of health issues and scientific reporting
- secondary research skills including collection and interpretation of data from valid sources and drawing reasoned conclusions
The course encompasses practicals that allow you to learn in the context of realistic workplace situations, as well as gaining relevant scientific knowledge and laboratory analytical skills beneficial for employability within the medical and science sectors. The qualification combines with almost all AS or A level subjects, with specific links to learning in subjects such as physical education and sport, sociology, chemistry and psychology.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Sixth Form at Malton standard entry requirement for vocational courses: 4 GCSEs at Grade 4+ to include English or Maths.
EQUIPMENT:
There is no specific equipment required but as all assignments are completed digitally you must have a fully functioning iPad or laptop.
SKILLS:
You will need to have skills in independent learning and research and to be reflective. Effective communication both verbally and in written form is also important. Successful students demonstrate an inquisitive mind, good analytical skills and a strong work ethic.
ASSESSMENT:
The AAQ qualification is equivalent to 1 A level and carries the same UCAS points. You will study FOUR modules: unit 1 and unit 2, which are assessed by external exams; unit 3 and an optional unit which are assignment based and are assessed by your teacher.
FUTURE PROSPECTS:
The BTEC AAQ in Medical Science will support applications for Sports Therapy, Pharmaceutical Science, Biomedical Sciences, Paramedical Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, and Psychology along with other health related courses. There is a very wide range of employment opportunities and further vocational training following successful completion of this course.
