Welcome from the Heads of Guidance
As Heads of Guidance, we support our young people with their post 18 choices, whether that be going to university or applying for apprenticeships or employment.
Students are often very ambitious, wanting to do well in their studies and to go on to fulfil their career ambitions. However, there are times when knowing exactly what needs doing when can be a challenge, and this is where our role allows us to offer advice and support, at what can be a critical time in students lives. There is often more than one pathway into a chosen career and by demonstrating these we give students all the tools they need to make the right choices.
The process starts early with interviews with our Year 11 students to enable us to identify those continuing with full-time study post 16, as well as those aspiring to Oxbridge, Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary Science and medical related careers such as Nursing and Midwifery. All will require additional support in their applications for university, and as well as supplementary guidance we invite external speakers to highlight the requirements of applying for particular degree courses. We also provide guidance for those seeking apprenticeships and those who wish to study abroad, as well as those looking to study at academies for the performing arts. It is the diversity of applications that makes being Heads of Guidance such enjoyable and interesting positions in the school.
Tutors in the Sixth Form help to support each individual in their form-groups both academically and pastorally, including one-to-one meetings every two to three weeks. Here academic progress and ‘next steps’ are frequently discussed. All students are asked to think about their future career plans very early on, which from experience is the best way of guaranteeing them their preferred final destination, one which they can be truly proud of.
As well as the one-to-one support available, students at Malton also have access to ‘Unifrog’. This is a careers guidance platform designed to offer both university and apprenticeship applicants the very best tools to find what they are looking for.
We look forward to working with you to enable you to become the best you can be.
