U16s are Unbeatable!Janet Burrows
For the fifth year in a row Malton School’s Year 11 girls’ football team have reached the County Cup Final; and with 2 wins already to their name, in 2019 they once again proved to be unbeatable!
This year’s final on 1 May, was against Bedale School and pre-match nerves were running high – it being the first year the team had encountered the Bedale team which included an England pathway player. The pre-game message to the Malton Team was simple – play for each other, work as hard as you can and be confident!
From the first minute the girls stuck to the game plan – playing as a team, working hard for each other when not in possession of the ball, and creating space and opportunities when in possession. They crafted a number of excellent moves and passages of play, creating a lot of chances and keeping the opposition keeper and defence very busy. An early goal from Pegrum seemed to settle the opening nerves, and Malton really began to get into their flow after 10 minutes. Wave after wave of attack saw Malton race into a 4 goal lead inside 30 minutes. Malton’s defence was excellent, with every player working hard to win the ball back and prevent any Bedale attempt at goal. However, just before the half time break, Bedale’s England and York player scored a great 30 yard lob, after collecting the ball from a Malton goal kick. In response, the Malton team produced a fifth goal before the break.
The second half continued very much the same, with every player doing their bit to maintain the Malton pressure. Beth Barnes and Florence Pegrum were a constant threat down the left side, with Izzy Matique linking play excellently between midfield and the forward line, in a performance that was almost unplayable for the Bedale defence. A number of excellent saves by Kristen Brady early in the second half helped Malton stay in control of the game and increase their lead. With 20 minutes to go the game became quite frantic as both teams tired, resulting in gaps appearing across the pitch. Both teams took full advantage, with Bedale creating one goal and scoring two others. In response, goals from Pegrum, Matique, Blundell and a much-deserved goal for Barnes capped a very impressive performance by Malton – and a definitive victory.
The match ended 11-4 to Malton with goals came from Florence Pegrum (5), Izzy Matique (4), Maddie Blundell (1) and Beth Barnes (1).
This latest victory is one of many in a long line of success, the team having has also reached the QF and twice the Last 16 of the National Cup, won the District one day festival four times and District Knock Out Cup three times during their time at the school. An amazing achievement, from a fantastic team who have really created an excellent legacy at the school.
