Y7 Student Luna Walking On Air

Y7 Student Luna Walking On Air

Y7 student Luna has been literally walking on air.  Just before Christmas, she had the opportunity to sing “Walking in the Air”, the theme tune to “The Snowman”, with a live orchestra and in front of a paying audience of more than 1,000 at the Barbican in York!

Luna, who has been singing for as long as she can remember, was asked by her singing tutor (our very own Miss Nicky) to audition for the part. Having never watched the film, but keen to get some audition experience, Luna had just 4 days to practice and so took every opportunity she could to refine her solo. Nationally, there were 180 auditions held to find just 30 singers for the 30 shows of the Snowman Tour 2025.  (Luna one was one of two singers who performed in the two shows held at the Barbican on 22 December).

Having auditioned, Luna had a nervous wait to find out if she’d been successful. But when her mum finally received the email saying she’d been selected, Luna was incredibly excited. She then had a couple of months to keep practicing at home and with Miss Nicky. On the day of the performance, Luna spent the morning rehearsing her big moment with the orchestra.

And when her time in the spotlight arrived, Luna was surprised to find she wasn’t as nervous as she often is but got up on stage and gave it her all. So successful was she that a Radio York listener emailed the station, suggesting they should interview Luna, which they did. You can listen to the interview, which includes Luna singing live on air, here. (The interview is about 1hour and 48 minutes’ in from the start of the programme).

When she’s not singing, Luna also enjoys dancing and acting and is part of local performing arts company, Kirkham Henry. She’s taken part in shows such as Matilda and Shrek, as well as pantomimes. She’s currently taking part in the Malton pantomime and is also rehearsing for the school performance of Chicago in March.

Luna would like to pursue a career on stage but at the moment has no firm plans as to what that might look like. Not surprisingly her favourite subjects at school are Music, Dance and Drama, but she also enjoys History.
