welcome from Mrs cooper – director of sixth form
“Like so many other schools up and down the country, we have been continually disappointed not to be able to physically welcome you to the Sixth Form so you can meet the staff and see the facilities for yourself. We’ve therefore created a series of videos and presentations to give you a flavour of our vibrant Sixth Form and the chance to meet, albeit virtually, some of our staff and students, as well as take a tour of the entire school.
We do hope the information here and in our Sixth Form web pages will help you decide how the personalised pathways at the Sixth Form at Malton can help you attain your future goals. If you have any further questions, do please either e-mail or ring us:
- Tel: 01653 692828
- E-mail: firstname.lastname@example.org
In these strange times in which we all find ourselves, it is still our hope to be able to welcome you to School before the start of the next academic year. In the meantime, we will use both our web-site and our social media sites to keep you updated of developments and events for applicants.”
We hope you will choose to join us in September 2021
GUIDE TO OUR VIRTUAL OPEN EVENING
If you are new to Malton School / the Sixth Form at Malton School, you may wish to start with this short video introducing the Sixth Form (2 minute watch).
You can also look through our online prospectus here.
As part of our live, virtual Open Evening, Mr Williams, Headteacher, and Mrs Cooper, Director of Sixth Form, both gave presentations offering an insight into the ethos of the Sixth Form, our teaching and learning and excellent track record, as well as some of the wider opportunities open to Sixth Form students. If you missed our virtual Open Evening, you can watch the presentations here (17 minute watch).
During our live open evening we held a Q&A session in which prospective parents and students could ask our team any question. This is available to listen to as a podcast below:
studying at sixth form
Studying at Sixth Form is very different to GCSE – there is a greater focus on independent learning, but also a greater chance for you to develop your knowledge and skills in areas that really interest you. The subject teachers in Sixth Form are all passionate about their subjects. Whilst you’ve been unable to meet them personally, we interviewed a number of subject staff asking them what they enjoy most about teaching in Sixth Form, how it differs to KS4 and and how we help prepare you for life after School:
We offer a total of 26 post 16 study options at Malton. The individual course details can be found here, but all subject staff have put together a short video or audio presentation (10 minutes or less) in which they introduce their subject and answer the most commonly asked questions they receive from students:
pathways through sixth form
From September 2021, students joining us will follow one of 3 pathways during their time in Sixth Form:
- Early Entry for students aspiring to academic further education at Oxbridge, Russell Group and research-based universities. This is also the pathway for students who need to submit an early UCAS entry.24
- Higher Vocational including work experience and volunteering for students aspiring to higher degree apprenticeships, vocational degrees and employment.
- Enhanced to help students gain extra-curricular qualifications and achievements which will create a strong and diverse application and provide you with numerous post 18 pathways, be that university or vocational.
For more information on the pathways please click here
an ipad school
As an iPad School every student has access to an iPad to enhance learning – both in school at at home. The use of such technology proved invaluable during lockdown – both for Year 12 students as well as those preparing to make the transition to Sixth Form. Year 12 students, in particular, were able to continue with a full timetable, accessing all their lessons and teaching materials through their iPads (4 minute watch).
the sixth form pastoral team
We have a dedicated Pastoral Team in Sixth Form who are all non-teaching:
Mrs Holden (Assistant Head of Sixth Form) plays a key role within both Sixth Form and KS4 to help all our students, whether from Malton or other schools, make a smooth transition to KS5. Her focus is particularly on academic support and the UCAS process. Additionally, Mrs Holden will support those students who have opted for the the Early Entry pathway.
Mrs Pulling (Assistant Head of Sixth Form) has been part of the Malton School family for the last 12 years working in a pastoral capacity. Her role within Sixth Form is to support students academically, socially and emotionally. Mrs Pulling will also provide specific support to those students who have opted for the Higher Vocational pathway.
Mr Dent as Head of Guidance is able to provide students with a tailored and ongoing plan of support to help ensure they achieve their ambitions when they leave us aged 18. This process starts at the beginning of Year 12 and continues throughout Year 13. Mr Dent will play a particularly important role if you choose our Enhanced pathway.
They are supported in their work by the Sixth Form Tutors. The Tutors this year are:
- Miss Burrow
- Mrs Brooks
- Mr Edwards
- Mrs Eldrett
- Mr Wilson
We are very fortunate to have some first rate facilities as a School, these include specialist art, cooking, drama, science and technology rooms as well as our sports centre with full-sized floodlit 3G astro-turf pitch. We also have a large campus with plenty of outdoor space for students.
As you’ve been unable to take a physical tour of School, we’ve put together two (sped-up) virtual tours. We hope you enjoy them:
Malton School has been transporting students into the school for many years and also has an excellent out-of-catchment service. Charges for our own transport, for out-of-catchment students, are tiered according to distance from school. Students who live within catchment, but live more than 3 miles from school, will be eligible for NYCC transport.
For more information visit the transport section of our website
Sixth Form students have their own servery in the Common Room, serving a range of hot and cold snacks, as well as drinks. The servery is open every day from 10.30am until 1.30pm.
In the West Wing Hall, our catering team offer a selection of breakfast butties and hot chocolate before school.

a final word from our students
We think the Sixth Form at Malton School is a great place to study and a great place from which to plan your next steps. But don’t just take our word for it. We’ve left the final word to some of our current students. (4 minute watch).
covid 19 and filming
All the videos and presentations created specifically for the Open Evening were filmed in a Covid safe manner. However, some of the footage is historic and was filmed before social distancing was necessary.
